Only five weeks remain to shop at the Southeast Area Farmers’ Market! On Saturday Oct. 12, the market meets at LINC. The harvest is abundant and it’s a great time to but fresh local veggies to freeze or can for the winter months ahead.

Community partner, United Healthcare, is sending its Kent County community outreach coordinator, Molly Carpenter, to share information on accessing free benefits if you have Medicare and/or Medicaid.

20190824_110954The Southeast Area Farmers’ Market will meet 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at MLK Jr. Park, 900 Fuller SE 49506 this Saturday, Sept. 28. In addition to shopping for fresh local produce, baked goods, and crafts, stop by to chat with the community partners planning to be there:

  • Grand Rapids Public Library will host Storytime at the market through Oct. 26.
  • United Healthcare will share information on how to access free benefits with Medicare and Medicaid.

GrpLJoin staff from the Grand Rapids Public Library for a very special story time at the Southeast Area Farmer’s Market every Saturday starting Sept. 14 from 12 – 3 p.m! They will read stories, sing songs, have activities, and information on library programs. Come celebrate!

The Southeast Area Farmer’s Market meets from 11 a,m, to 4 p.m. at:

  • LINC, 1167 Madison Ave just north of Hall St. on Sept. 14 and 21, Oct. 5, 12 and 19; and Nov. 2 and 9.
  • MLK Jr Park on Sept 28  and Oct. 26.

Ayanfe Jamison has stepped into the market manager role at the Southeast Area Farmers’ Market. She also works at New City Farm as its garden coordinator and farm assistant.

Ayanfe hails from North Carolina and has great experience with agriculture, community development, and youth empowerment. When you stop by the market Saturday, please give her a warm welcome!

The market will meet at the LINC lot on Sept. 7, 14, and 21. and at MLK Jr. Park, 900 Fuller SE 49506 on Sept. 28.

The Southeast Area Farmers’ Market provides a wide variety of local produce, cottage kitchen foods, personal care items, crafts and ready-to-eat foods. Our vendors are primarily women of color, home growers and residents of OKT’s targeted neighborhoods. In addition to providing access to healthy food, the market hosts meal preparation activities, workshops and guests from community organizations.

Kids Food Basket is joining the Southeast Area Farmers’ Market this Saturday as a vendor. Their melons, tomatoes, and sunflowers will be a wonderful complement to the fresh Michigan produce our other vendors will on hand.

For more convenient access to rest room facilities, the market will meet at LINC most weekends through November. See exact dates and locations below.

Did you know that many of the native species we see around us (and label as weeds) once were a prize source of both food and medicine? On Saturday August 24, citizen forester and urban forager, Laura Casaletto, will share how to identify the edible plants growing in your Grand Rapids neighborhoods. She has been using foraging as a means to supplement her family’s food budget for many years.

Stop by to sample Sumac-ade drinks (a delicious pink lemonade substitute) and two types of finger foods made primarily from wild greens including lambs quarters and garden hostas.

Even if you’re not participating in the run or walk, you’ll find lots of fun activities to take part in and resources to benefit from–lots of kids, activities, too!

While you’re there, be sure to shop under the yellow market tents for fresh, local fruits and veggies and delicious cottage kitchen goods. The market is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Run festivities begin at 8 a.m. and run through 11 a.m.

Who’s ready for National Farmers Market Week? The annual event celebrating the important role farmers markets play in the nation’s food system kicks off on August 4. Whether you manage a market, or just like to shop at one, here are 5 ways you can not only help make this year’s celebration, the biggest and best yet, but support farmers markets all year long!

1.       Visit your local farmers market – obviously! Meet a friend, take your family, or just spend a relaxing day by yourself taking in the fun and festivities. Click here to find a farmers market near you.
2.       Support the farmers! Did you know farmers receive only 15 cents of every food dollar that shoppers spend at traditional food retail outlets, like grocery stores? But when you shop at a farmers market, 100% of your food dollar goes directly to the farmer. So be sure to buy some farm-fresh food when you visit. Your support is particularly important to new and young farmers, who rely on farmers markets to grow their business.
3.       Become a volunteer! It takes a lot of work to operate a farmers market, and often with limited staff and a tight budget. Reach out to your local market and find out how you can help.
4.       Spread the word! Tell your friends and family why you love farmers markets, and encourage them to become regular shoppers. Become an influencer for local agriculture; share your market’s social media posts, or create some of your own. Be sure to follow FMC on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and share our posts about the benefits of farmers markets, too.

Kent County Food Policy Council seeking community input

The new Kent County Food Policy Council will have representatives at the Southeast Area Farmers’ Market this Saturday, July 20.  They will share information and invite market patrons to take part in a community survey. The Council is supported by the Kent County Essential Needs Task Force staff and includes persons from the Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan State University, New City Neighbors, Access of West Michigan, and Our Kitchen Table.

Unlike water, air, and land, there is currently no local department of food. Greater public awareness is needed to understand the impact the local food system has on the area’s environmental, social, and economic health and what policies are necessary to ensure future sustainability of the region. The Kent County Food Policy Council hopes to represent the diversity of the food system and of the local community to then act as a centralized body and as a clear voice that can inform local policy and decision makers on the current and future issues that will impact local food production, consumption, and access.

Its mission is to advocate for and promote a Good Food system in Kent County (as defined by the Michigan Good Food Charter). Its vision is for everyone in Kent County to enjoy a thriving Good Food system. Its values include equity, sustainability, and thriving economies .
